Former Girl's Day actress Hwang Ji-sun and ex-Nine Muses model Park Eun-ji have officially terminated their exclusive contracts with entertainment agency Modenberry Korea, marking another significant shift in the Korean entertainment industry's evolving landscape.
The contract termination, which took effect on the 24th of July, was announced following extensive discussions between both artists and the management company. This development comes amid a year of significant legal disputes reshaping the K-pop industry, with numerous high-profile contract disputes making headlines throughout 2024 and early 2025.
Mutual Agreement Reached Between Artists and Agency
Modenberry Korea released an official statement on July 19th, confirming the amicable nature of the contract termination process. "After sufficient discussion with the two artists, Hwang Ji-sun and Eun-ji, we have agreed to terminate our exclusive contracts early," the agency stated. The company emphasized their continued support for both performers' future endeavors.
The entertainment agency, led by CEO Ok Seung-hwa, operates as a comprehensive entertainment company managing various talents including former DIA member Somyi, actor Jo Si-yoon, and former Teen Top member Bang Min-soo. The company's diverse roster reflects the changing dynamics of South Korean entertainment management.
Industry Trends Show Rising Contract Disputes
2024 has come down heavy on K-pop girl groups with back to back disbandment and contract terminations, highlighting broader industry challenges. The entertainment sector has witnessed increased scrutiny of artist-agency relationships, with performers seeking greater creative control and better terms.
Hwang Ji-sun, known for her work with the popular girl group Girl's Day, and Park Eun-ji, who gained recognition as a Nine Muses member, represent the growing trend of established artists renegotiating their professional relationships. In Korea, according to Article 3, Paragraph 2 of the "Standardized Agreement for Pop Culture Artists", artists can notify the cancellation of their contract if the contract exceeds 7 years.
In their farewell statement, Modenberry Korea expressed gratitude toward both artists: "We deeply thank the two artists who have been with Modenberry Korea, and we will continue to support and applaud their future activities." The agency also encouraged fans to maintain their support for Hwang Ji-sun and Park Eun-ji's upcoming projects.
Both performers are expected to announce their future plans independently, following the completion of their contract obligations. The entertainment industry continues to evolve as artists seek new opportunities and creative directions in an increasingly competitive market.
